Natural & Vegan Deodorant Overview

Natural deodorants can be hard (figuratively and metaphorically). Here are reviews of all the ones I've tried so far.

Why use natural deodorants?

Sweating is a natural way that your body detoxifies. Conventional deodorants clog your pores, which leads to those toxins building up. These deodorants I’m reviewing are aluminum free and will neutralize odor, but still allow your body to do its thang.

1. Tom's of Maine Deodorant (Unscented)

Price: $4.57

Cruelty-free and Vegan.
Tom's is cruelty-free but their parent company is not.

I got this at Target when I had a panic about aluminum deodorant. They had this one and a lavender one, but I'm not a fan of lavender so I chose unscented.

This was the worst deodorant I've tried. It barely lasted a few hours and when it faded, it would leave me smelling a lot worse than if I wasn't wearing it. I guess it didn't work with my body chemistry.

2. Kiss My Face Natural Liquid Rock (Fragrance Free)

Price: $3.99

Cruelty-free and Vegan.

While Kiss My Face isn't carried at Target, it's available at most health food stores and I've also seen it pop up at TJ Maxx/Marshalls.

This deodorant is a liquid roll on, which makes application quick and easy. It did the job in the cooler months, but in the summer, I have to re-apply once or twice so I haven't been reaching for it.

** Potassium Alum warning **
This is a controversial ingredient because some say that it is linked to aluminum, so I would suggest avoiding it if you can. Some other brands that use potassium alum are Crystal and Alvera.

3. Schmidt's Deodorant (Bergamot + Lime)

Price: $8.99

Cruelty-free and Vegan.

I've spotted Schmidt's at Whole Foods and Urban Outfitters, as well as a few online shops.

I never thought I would be scooping my deodorant out of a jar, but here I am. The things I do for my health. To use this, you scoop out a bit with the little spatula that's included, warm it between your fingers, and rub it into your pits. I bear with the pesky application because this deodorant works extremely well and the bergamot lime scent is amazing!

Schmidt's keeps me fresh all day, even in the summer. The only problem is that a lot of people have reactions to the baking soda in it. I haven't reacted yet, but I've also been being careful about using it too many days in a row.

A baking soda free alternative is offered by Meow Meow Tweet, which I've heard loads of good things about but have yet to try.

4. North Coast Organics (Revolver and Al Sol)

Price: $9.99

Cruelty-free and Vegan.

These are available at a few stores, but you're probably going to need to order it online.

I bought "Revolver" for my boyfriend and "Al Sol" for myself. One thing I disliked was that the descriptions on their site were very vague. They didn't give you much of a sense of what the scents would smell like because the ingredients would say "proprietary blend of essential oils." It seems that they have now updated the ingredients of Al Sol to say that it contains these essential oils: bergamot, cypress, lavender, coriander, myrrh, clary sage, citronella, eucalyptus lemon and eucalyptus. Revolver and Al Sol smell similar but Revolver smells more musky/spicy, while Al Sol is a bit more sweet. I like fresh and fruity scents so I ended up being disappointed with Al Sol's smell.

These deodorants work pretty well and will last through most (but not all) of a summer day. My main complaint is that they are difficult to apply because the stick is a very hard texture. This probably wouldn't be as much of an issue if you live in a warmer climate. You can try to warm it up by holding it in your armpit or using your fingers, but if I'm going to go to that much trouble, I'd rather use Schmidt's.

5. Routine Cream (Sexy Sadie)

Price: $3.00

Cruelty-free and Vegan.

I wasn't planning on getting any more deodorants until I finished my current ones, but then this popped up in July's Petit Vour box.

I really like the texture of this! It's another deodorant that you have to apply with your fingers, but it takes less effort than Schmidt's because it's creamy and you can skip the warming up part.

This is similar in staying power to North Coast Organics - it lasts almost all day and I usually skip on reapplying. Part of the reason I don't feel that it lasts all day may be that I think this scent smells a little weird once it's faded. "Sexy Sadie" is spicy but slightly sweet, kinda cinnamon-y. Now I'm thinking of that Lana Del Rey song that's like "now my life is sweet like cinnamon." Anywho, I would consider getting this in a different scent. The full size is quite pricy though at $24.

6. Blissoma Scentless Stick Mini

Price: $8.99

Cruelty-free and Vegan.

I won this in a giveaway, but I think Blissoma is primarily sold online.

I haven't had this one for long, but so far it has been holding up well through the summer heat. Blissoma's deodorant doesn't glide on like conventional ones, but it's still a step up from North Coast Organics. It's got an interesting gray color that will show up in your pits, but if that bothers you, you can rub it in.

Although it doesn't have a fun scent like Schmidt's, it still works very well at controlling odor. Plus, they formulated this with sensitive skin in mind, so it has low levels of baking soda combined with other ingredients like zinc, which are supposed to soothe the skin. No major cons to report about this one!

Overall: My favorite deodorant is Schmidt's. If you're looking to get one in a stick form, I'd recommend Blissoma.

  5. The use of all-natural ingredients in natural deodorants means that no harmful chemicals are making their way into our eco-systems, both in production and use.Primitive Outpost
